In Week 4, I decided to use Blogger as the blog platform, and then questioned the wisdom of free blog hosting in Week 6. Once I set up the Brush with Extinction website, the default web host supplied by 1and1 was WordPress. I found the WordPress interface more elegant and intuitive than Blogger and switched my blog host. However, I quickly ran up against the limitations of the preinstalled version supplied by 1and1, namely with how the blog looks. The number of blog themes were extremely limited and I ended up using the default WordPress theme, which is based on the ubiquitous Kubrick theme. The reason for this extremely boring choice was caused by a combination of expediency and lack of skills with creating my own theme. While searching through the interest for better themes I could utilize, I came across BMW Blog. The blog has a header that ties extremely well with the content of the blog, showing several BMW cars racing in the rain, the title and tag in a section of the picture with a neutral background. I then resolved to find out how to make a custom WordPress header using the image from the website. A quick search on Google turned up how to go about it, but I discovered that the 1and1 WordPress version did not allow adjustment of the elements of the blog’s theme. More research and I found out that what I needed to do was to install my own version of WordPress on the website to have all of the options that are available to WordPress users.

Week three of website statistics continue to show that the majority visits to the website are from the web designer and myself, making tweaks and adding blog entries. There were 62 unique visits and 70 page views, and the only domain that referred visits was Google.nl. I am not sure what brought the Dutch Googlistas but all I can say is welkom!
